Is It Hard to Get a Job in Perfumery?

Is perfumery difficult to enter? Learn the difference between becoming a professional perfumer and working in the broader fragrance industry.

Becoming a professional perfumer can be competitive and highly specialized.

Professional fragrance creation requires much more than simply having a good sense of smell. Training, ingredient knowledge, repeated scent evaluation and experience can all be important.

But working in fragrance is much broader than becoming a perfumer.

Brands need marketers, designers, salespeople, content creators, e-commerce specialists, photographers, product developers and people who understand customer behavior.

So if you love fragrance but do not see yourself formulating perfume, that does not mean the industry is closed to you.

Find the part of fragrance that overlaps with a skill you already have—and start there.
